A Guidebook to Genealogy Research in Waterbury, CTIn the late 1970's, the author of this site began working on a "little project" to research and record a family history. You can guess where that led based on the site that you're now visiting online. After more than 20 years of research in various parts of New England (including extensive research in Waterbury), a great amount of research material has been collected, recorded, and analized, but there's always more to do. The Irish and Italian immigrants that came to America in the 1870's and 1900, respectively, likely had no idea that their voyage would be of interest to so many people more thank 100 years later.
Given the enormous impact that immigrants of many different ethnic groups played in the development of Waterbury, and the wide variety of record sources that existing to help genealogists of all levels, I decided to record my learnings in this guidebook. Since there are numerous historical collections that exist with the city of Waterbury, it has been difficult to remain focused on the task at hand - - a guidebook written specifically for researchers seeking clues about ancestors whose lives touched Waterbury at some point and in some way. Anyone with a passion for history will understand the challenge that this has been (and continues to be).
Chapters in the guidebook include:
- Cemetery & Funeral Home Records
- Library Collections (Silas Bronson & Others)
- Bureau of Vital Statistics (Birth, Marriage, Death, Burial)
- Census Records (New Haven County)
- Newspapers of Waterbury
- Probate & Land Records
- Religious Records
- City Directories
- Mattatuck Historical Society (Mattatuck Museum)
- Schools, Clubs, & Social Organizations
- Online Sources dealing with Waterbury
- Others "Hidden" sources
My goal is to publish this book by October 2003 in celebration of the 3rd "National Family History Month".
